NAME: Lt. Grover A. YOUNGS OCCUPATION: Farmer; Merchant BURIAL: Lot 5&6, Block J, Elmwood Cemetery, Kansas City, Missouri. NOTES: 1. In 1861 at age 19 he enlisted in 5th Kansas Cavalry and served 3 yrs, mustered out as a 2nd Lt. 2. Farmed for 10 years 3. Became a merchant at Aullvill, MO for 4 yrs and then sold real estate in Higginsville, MO and acquired a large fortune. 4. Was a Freemason, Odd Fellow and a Democrat. 5. In 1889 when Southern sympathizers decided to build a Confederate home for veterans of the Civil War, they purchased the Grover Youngs farm located about one mile north of Higginsville. They raised $18,000 to purchase the farm. 6. Mr. Youngs, a Union sympathizer, gave $5,000 to help establish the home in Higginsville. 7. The actions of the carpetbaggers and other Northern actions made him sympathetic for the South. After the last Confederate soldier died in 1950, the grounds were divided. Part of the land is now the Confederate Memorial State Historical Site and part is now the Higginsville Habilitation Center, a division of the Missouri Department of Mental Health.
